Junjappa.....Me and the less Traveled Road!

Oh! What a spellbinding experience!......

After 24 hours of continuous work with 2-3 hours of short breaks, When I had returned home it was 11 o'clock in the night, yesterday ! (27-Feb-2014) Me and my wife had already decided to go to witness a unique tradition of worshiping Shiva on the occasion of Mahashivaratri!

I was so tired and sleepy. She said it with half mind, "It's already late. It is better to cancel". I said, "No way! Once it is decided, we must do it! Get ready within five minutes and we are driving down to the unknown place. Where there is a will, there is the way!".

We started from our home by 11:45pm. But were not sure about the exact road to the Village called Kaluvarahalli, near Tavarekere Hobli, Tumkur District. But my conscious was saying that we were going to experience something unique! My wife silently followed me! After one hour fifteen minutes drive, on the very less traveled, unknown road, we, somehow managed to reach the destination by 1 am! It was a real challenge till we reached the remote and most backward village, Kaluvarahali, situated about 80 kms away from Tumkur.

As soon as we reached the Junjappa Temple.... Oh! I am not able to capture the feeling I experienced! It was simply superb and mesmerizing! Junjappanna (The narrator) was singing the story of Junjappa (Shambhu) with intense involvement without the knowledge of this physical word! That made to forget all my tiredness! I was recharged by the enchanting music coming out from the bottom of the heart of the singer!

'Junjappa's story recital through folk songs' is one of the unique folk traditions practiced by the tribes in this region. It truly reflects the ideology, sacrifice, talent, patience and clean heartedness of the unique tribe called Kadu Golla.

The entire recital, which begins in the night and goes on till next morning is a real mystic experience! Junjappanna (the narrator) and the Ganekaara with his Gane (one who supports him with a flute like instrument) both forget this world and make the audience also forget everything! It was a unique experience. I will shortly upload a short video of the same soon! Till then....here are some photographs of my adventurous, yet fruitful, contented experience on the night of Mahashivaratri Jagaran!!
